The Republic of Zimbabwe – formerly Rhodesia – should be known for more than just its dramatic landscapes and wildlife diversity, and into the digital revolution that is no longer a new phenomenon.
It’s that time of the year again, when digital marketers and businesses look back into 2019 and ahead to 2020 to assess growth and map out goals, which is why we’ve looked into digital marketing trends to help you gain an edge in the competitive market, this time for Zimbabwe.

But before we begin, it’s important to ask: facing an economic crisis, what’s the relevance of digital marketing in Zimbabwe?

The above graph shows that despite a slightly concerning outlook into the Zimbabwean economy for 2020, the country has had a 200 thousand user increase in active social media users (20 percent) and 74 thousand user increase in Internet users (1.1 percent). While not huge on a global scale, these are significant numbers.
From the perspective of the Zimbabwean economy, it’s a delicately complicated reality that requires marketers to understand that while traditional social media platforms like Whatsapp and Facebook are limited, there is web traffic to local websites, and thus, a compelling reason to look into Zimbabwe’s digital marketing.

The country’s Internet usage is impressive, with 6.8 million (40 percent) active users, with 5.6 million of those on mobile. Despite the limitations to Internet access (including current information found in newspapers, radio, TV), there is a lot of importance given to advertisements on these platforms.

The digital age and cyberspace have introduced a new way for corporations and businesses to speak. Advertising and marketing campaigns are measured in real-time and are effective in terms of time and cost, and have brought the digital marketplace to the global village level, helping people reach customers and sellers within a fraction of the time and effort taken before. As shown below, the consumer readiness for mobile connectivity is 65.3 (out of a score of 100).

The benefits of digital marketing in Zimbabwe include:
- Easier access to international marketplaces, allowing businesses to connect with companies outside of their own country’s economy.
- More effective regional competition. With difficult competition from international – commerce giants, smaller local e-commerce companies in Zimbabwe struggle to gain traction.
- More global visibility. A lot of local organisations don’t have online homes, which is an issue because marketplaces aren’t just found, they’re made. Self-promotion of businesses should be understood as an effective tool that it is in order to broaden one’s sphere of impact.
With a huge scope for digital marketing in the coming year, Zimbabwe can use its steadily growing social media, e-commerce, and mobile usage to effectively pave its way into the international market as a solid business player.
