Top Digital Marketing Trends In Tanzania 2020
Home to Africa’s highest mountain in Kilimanjaro National Park, today’s post is on digital marketing trends in the United Republic of Tanzania for this year.
Following the COVID-19 pandemic that has caused uncertainties, plight, and lockdowns across the globe, now is more a time than ever for the world to shift to digital in order to continue functioning in any way. Our digital marketing agency works remotely from London, Kenya, and Mauritius, and is here to guide you into the transition from office work to remote work with all its ensuing responsibilities and changes.
As mobile connection in East Africa is at 60 percent of the whole population, this provides a solid base for digital marketing trends to take off, especially during periods of quarantine when social media and technology use may be at its highest.

With a population of 58.8 million people, Tanzania has incredible equality of population: 50 percent of men and women. With a median age of 18 and an overall literacy rate (age 15+) of 78 percent, this country is ahead in digital and can provide great opportunities for digital marketers and companies.
Understanding these graphs and data is an extremely helpful way for digital marketers to get a feel of the country’s digital and social environment, and use it to their marketing advantage. For example, 61 percent of Tanzania’s population falls under the 13-18 years age group, which can lead marketers to better strategise their campaigns to target this population accordingly.

25 percent of the population are Internet users, with the majority of these (67 percent) accessing the Internet via mobile phones, or laptops and desktops (31 percent). Thus, it becomes important to design websites and social media pages in a way that’s available on all devices.
It becomes especially significant to know these trends when you look at the chart below, as 99 percent of active social media users access it through mobile phones.

As Tanzania is currently a primarily cash-based economy, digital marketers must keep in mind the above graph; 21 percent of the population has an account with a financial institution, and 12 percent makes online purchases/pays bills online. Rather than be a deterrent for companies, this is a great opportunity to enter and create a niche that improves digital (and marketing) in Tanzania.
As Tanzania’s Minister for Works, Transportation, and Communications Issack Kamwelwe says, one must modernise their operations in order to keep up with the digital age.
“… diversifying our products and services with a view of maintaining a vibrant sector and eventually remain relevant.”
– Hassan Mwang’ombe, Tanzania Postal Corporation (TPC) Postmaster General
